Immersion of ashes at Agni Theertham, performed with Vedic rites by experienced priests. We handle the arrangements so your family can focus on the ritual.
Asthi Visarjan - also called Asthi Pooja or asthi immersion - is the rite in which the ashes of a departed family member are immersed in sacred water. It is performed with Vedic mantras on behalf of the family, and is understood to help the departed soul on its onward journey.
Rameswaram holds particular significance for these rites. Often described as the Varanasi of the South, it is one of the places families across India travel to specifically for the last rites of their loved ones. The immersion is traditionally carried out at Agni Theertham, the shore beside the Ramanathaswamy temple.

By tradition the ashes are collected after cremation and immersed within the first ten days, and many families travel to Rameswaram in that period. It is also common for families to come later - when relatives can gather, or when travel from another state allows. If time has passed since the cremation, that does not prevent the rite being performed.
Tell us your situation when you enquire and the priest can advise on what is appropriate for your family.
Asthi Visarjan is generally performed by the son or the nearest relative of the departed, though practice varies by family custom and community. If you are unsure who should perform it in your case, mention it when you enquire and the priest can guide you before you travel.
Families travelling for these rites often need a vehicle and a place to stay arranged around the ritual timing. If you need transport from Madurai or elsewhere, or a room near the temple, tell us when you enquire and we will plan the visit around the rite rather than the other way round.
Send us your preferred date and we will call you to confirm the arrangements.
