The sesame offering made for departed ancestors, performed with Vedic rites at Rameswaram.
Thila Homam - also called Thila Tharpanam or Pitru Tharpanam - is a Vedic ritual performed for departed ancestors. Thila means sesame, and the rite centres on offerings of sesame made into the sacred fire while the prescribed mantras are recited.
It is traditionally performed to honour the pitrus and is associated with relief from Pitru Dosha, the affliction understood to arise when ancestral rites have not been observed. Families also perform it for relatives who died in difficult or untimely circumstances.
Rameswaram is one of the principal places in India for ancestral rites, and families travel here from across the country specifically to perform Thila Homam. The rite is generally carried out after a dip at Agni Theertham, the shore beside the Ramanathaswamy temple, and before darshan at the temple itself.
Thila Homam is performed through the year. Families often choose Amavasya days, Mahalaya Amavasya during the pitru paksha fortnight, or the thithi of the departed. If a particular day matters to your family, tell us when you enquire so the arrangement can be made for that date.
Thila Homam is generally performed by the son or the nearest male relative of the departed, though practice varies by family custom and community. If you are unsure what applies in your case, mention it when you enquire and the priest can advise you before you travel.

The names are commonly used for the same observance. Strictly, tharpanam is the offering of water and sesame to the ancestors, while homam refers to offerings made into the sacred fire. In practice the two are performed together, and most families use the names interchangeably.
Pitru Dosha is understood in tradition as the affliction arising when ancestral rites have not been observed. Thila Homam is among the rites traditionally performed in response to it.
