Navagraha Homam in Rameswaram

The rite addressed to the nine planetary deities, performed in full Vedic form by experienced priests.

Navagraha Homam at Rameswaram

What is Navagraha Homam?

Navagraha Homam - also called Navagraha Shanti or Navagraha Dosha Nivaran - is the rite addressed to the nine grahas: Surya, Chandra, Mangala, Budha, Brihaspati, Shukra, Shani, Rahu and Ketu.

Each of the nine is invoked in turn with its own mantras and offerings. It is among the most commonly arranged remedial rituals, performed when a horoscope reading indicates planetary affliction.

The Navagraha temple near Rameswaram

Families arranging Navagraha rites in this region often also visit the Navagraha temple at Devipattinam, on the way to Rameswaram from Ramanathapuram. It is one of the well-known Navagraha shrines in Tamil Nadu, and can be included if you would like it as part of your visit.

What the rite involves

The priest begins with the sankalpam naming the person for whom the rite is performed. Each of the nine grahas is then invoked in sequence, with the prescribed mantras and offerings made into the sacred fire. Longer and more elaborate forms of the homam exist; the form performed is settled when the arrangement is made.

A note on what the ritual is

Navagraha Homam is a traditional observance carried out according to Vedic custom. We arrange the priest, the materials and the venue so the rite is performed properly. What families take from the observance is a matter of their own faith and tradition.
