About 170 km each way Full day trip Vehicle with driver
Madurai temple tour - Meenakshi Amman Temple gopuram, temple corridor and Teppakulam

A full day in Madurai

Madurai lies about 170 km from Rameswaram, roughly three and a half to four hours by road each way. That leaves a good part of the day for sightseeing, but not enough of it to cover everything the city holds - which is why we offer a few different plans rather than one fixed list.

Each plan below is built around the Meenakshi Amman Temple, which almost every visitor wants to see, and then goes in a different direction depending on what matters most to your family.

About the timings below

These schedules are a guide, not a fixed programme. How the day runs depends on what time you are ready to start from Rameswaram and how long you would like for breakfast, lunch and rest along the way. Choose the start time that suits your family - the whole day shifts with it, and the driver will plan around you.

Plan D · Both Murugan abodes

Thiruparankundram & Pazhamudhircholai

For families following the Arupadai Veedu. Covers both the first and the sixth abodes in one day, along with Meenakshi and Alagar Kovil.

6:30 AMDepart Rameswaram
8:30 AMBreakfast stop
10:30 AMMeenakshi Amman Temple
12:00 PMThiruparankundram Murugan Temple

3:00 PMAlagar Kovil (Kallazhagar Temple)
4:00 PMPazhamudhircholai Murugan Temple
5:00 PMReturn - Rameswaram by about 9:00 PM

This is the longest of the four. It covers both abodes but means a later return and less time at Meenakshi. Worth choosing only if the Arupadai Veedu is your reason for the trip.

A note on the fare

The rate may differ slightly for plans that bring you back later in the evening. We confirm the full fare for your plan and date before you travel, and it stays as quoted. Our pricing is completely transparent - no hidden charges, and nothing added at the end of the trip.

The places these plans cover

Meenakshi Amman Temple

The temple at the centre of the city, dedicated to Meenakshi and Sundareswarar. Its towering gopurams, the Hall of Thousand Pillars and the Golden Lotus Tank are the reason most visitors come to Madurai. The temple closes for a few hours around midday, which is why every plan above places it first.

Thirumalai Nayakar Mahal

A seventeenth-century palace built by King Thirumalai Nayak, a short distance from the temple. What survives is chiefly the great colonnaded courtyard and the audience hall, with their heavy pillars and stucco work.

Thiruparankundram Murugan Temple

The first of the six Arupadai Veedu, the sacred abodes of Lord Murugan, on the south-western edge of the city. The main shrines are cut into the rock of the hillside.

Pazhamudhircholai Murugan Temple

The sixth of the Arupadai Veedu, set in wooded hills north of Madurai. It is the smallest and quietest of the six, and the drive up to it is part of the visit.

Alagar Kovil (Kallazhagar Temple)

A Vishnu temple in the Alagar hills a short way from Pazhamudhircholai, which is why the two are usually visited together. It is central to the Chithirai festival, when the deity is carried down to the Vaigai river.

Vandiyur Mariamman Teppakulam

One of the largest temple tanks in Tamil Nadu, with a mandapam at its centre. It is a short stop rather than a long visit, and it is at its best when full.

Gandhi Memorial Museum

Housed in a seventeenth-century palace building, the museum holds among its exhibits the dhoti Gandhi was wearing when he was assassinated. Worth an hour if your plan allows it.

Planning your day

If you are unsure which plan suits you, the simplest guide is this. Plan A if this is your first visit to Madurai and you would like an unhurried day. Plan B or C if there is one particular temple you have come for. Plan D only if you are following the Arupadai Veedu and want both abodes in a single day.

You are not held to any of them. If you would rather swap a place, drop one to spend longer at Meenakshi, or add somewhere that is not listed, tell us when you enquire and we will build the day around it.

Common questions

How far is Madurai from Rameswaram?

About 170 km, roughly three and a half to four hours by road each way. That is why this is a full day trip rather than a half day.

Can we do all seven places in one day?

Not comfortably. The places lie in different directions around the city, and with the drive from Rameswaram there is only so much of the day left. The four plans above each cover three or four places at a pace that works.

Why is the Meenakshi temple always first?

The temple closes for a few hours around midday. Visiting it in the morning means you are not waiting for it to reopen in the evening.

Do we have to start at 6:30 in the morning?

No. The times shown are a guide. Most families start a little later, and the day shifts accordingly. Tell us when you would like to leave and we will plan around it.

Can we change the plan or add a place?

Yes. The plans are suggestions, not fixed packages. Tell us what you would like to cover and we will build the day around it.

What does the tour cost?

The fare depends on your group size and the plan you choose, and may differ slightly for a later return. Send the enquiry form or call us and we will confirm before you travel.
