The traditional remedial rite for Sarpa Dosha, performed in full Vedic form by experienced priests.
Sarpa Shanti - also written Sarpa Shanthi, and closely related to Kaal Sarp Shanti - is a Vedic remedial ritual traditionally performed for Sarpa Dosha, also called Naga Dosha. In traditional astrology this is associated with the placement of Rahu and Ketu in a horoscope.
The rite is performed with offerings and mantras addressed to the naga deities. It is one of the pariharam rituals families arrange when a horoscope reading has indicated Sarpa Dosha.
Rameswaram is a long-established centre for pariharam rituals, and families travel here to have Sarpa Shanti performed in full Vedic form rather than in abbreviated versions. The rite is generally arranged in a yagashala rather than inside the temple itself.
Sarpa Shanti is a longer ritual than most, and the fire offerings are central to it. The priest begins with the sankalpam naming the person for whom the rite is performed, followed by the invocations, the homam, and the concluding offerings. The person concerned is normally expected to be present.
Families sometimes arrange Sarpa Shanti together with Navagraha Homam when a reading has indicated more than one affliction.
Sarpa Shanti is a traditional observance carried out according to Vedic custom. We arrange the priest, the materials and the venue so that the rite is performed properly. What families take from the observance is a matter of their own faith and tradition.
